DENTIST

How often should one go to the dentist? I ask this because many times professionals (in all branches) want us to visit them more often for $$$ health reasons!

A. Most adults and children should have dental checkups every six months, according to the US National Library of Medicine (NLM). Visits twice a year can help catch tooth decay or other dental problems early, before they have a chance to cause pain or other disturbances.

Going to the dentist twice a year allows you to be proactive instead of reactive about your teeth and dental health. And, as my grandmother used to say: “Mijito, wash and take care of the teeth you want to have when you are my age!”.

INVENTION OR DISCOVERY/ ALFREDO MÁRQUEZ:

Mathematics is a symbolic expression of something real. Humans are the ones who create the symbols, that is, they are an invention. Without humans there would be no mathematics.

R. Don Alfredo, also thank you that there are humans, if not, who would read me? 😉

TEARS

Do animals cry too?

A. Most animals with eyes produce tears, but only one releases them in moments of pain and joy: humans. Creatures across the animal kingdom feel emotion too, but humans are the biological anomaly for being able to see tears run down their faces during times of emotional turmoil or relief, and scientists remain stumped on exactly: why?

Human eyes actually produce three types of tears, all for different purposes. Basal tears help clean and lubricate the eyes, while reflex tears are a response to our environment (they appear when we cut onions). Emotional tears are the only kind we have some control over, and they have a slightly different chemical makeup, with more protein that can help them stick better to our faces, confirming to others that we’re genuinely happy, or just sitting around with a tear of two hours.

THE BOOTS

What is true about the fact that one of the astronauts who went to the moon left his boots on the surface?

A. This is true. After Neil Armstrong took one of the most important steps in human history, the boots he used to do it with were discarded on the Moon. In fact, the two Apollo 11 astronauts who walked the lunar surface, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, left behind their overshoes, along with their portable life support systems.

Leaving the equipment behind was not a symbolic gesture, it helped offset the additional weight of collected moon rocks that the shuttle would retrieve. And the astronauts did not return to Earth barefoot either. The treaded overshoes they abandoned were worn over flat-soled pressure boots (which they kept) for added traction while traversing the rocky terrain of the Moon.
