Matanzas: A young Cuban woman was murdered by her ex-partner in front of her four-year-old son

Yunisleive Fernández was murdered by her ex-partner on June 23 in the town of Torriente, province of killings. Four days before, the young woman had gone to the Police to ask for her help, after he had beaten her “savagely”.

According to an independent media report Cubanet, Fernández suffered serious injuries to her left eye from a kick that the assailant gave her the same day that she filed the complaint with the authorities. The signs of violence on her body were not enough for the Police to arrest her ex-partner.

“Upon learning that she had denounced him, he threatened her saying that he was going to kill her and her son, who is four years old,” Jonathan Adrián, the victim’s cousin, explained to that publication.

The young woman was killed with a knife in front of the child and his mother, who prevented the attacker from also attacking the minor. Jonathan assured Cubanet that she still has the clothes that her cousin was wearing the day she was killed because the Police have not even collected them for the investigation.

The macho crime was confirmed this Wednesday by the independent observatories against gender violence in Cuba. With the murder of Yunisleive, there are already 47 verified femicides on the island so far this year.

“June has been the most critical month of 2023”, recently explained to Martí News Yanelys Núñez, coordinator of the Alas Tensas Gender Observatory (OGAT).

That month, 12 femicides were confirmed, to which two others that occurred previously and verified in June must be added: Liudmila (Lula) Lewas Rendo, 34 years old, murdered by her partner on February 13, in the town of Pedro Soto , in Melena del Sur and Danila Rivero García, 47, killed on May 27 in the town of Bartle, Las Tunas province.

“It is inadmissible that no official Cuban institution or media echo this silent pandemic, and above all it is unacceptable that the regime does not adopt urgent measures such as the declaration of a state of emergency due to gender violence,” the OGAT questioned a few weeks ago.

On February 4 of this year, another young Cuban woman was murdered while trying to ask the authorities for protection. The femicide crime happened at dawn when Leidy Bacallao, a 17-year-old teenager, ran to the police station in the town of Camalote, in the Camagüey municipality of Nuevitas, to ask for help.

The assailant murdered her in the presence of the agents, who intervened when it was too late. Following the complaints on social networks, the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) issued a brief statement confirming the crime, without mentioning that it was a femicide.

“A 50-year-old individual, with terrible social behavior and multiple criminal records, killed his 17-year-old ex-partner, who was seeking shelter in the substation of the National Revolutionary Police in the community, with the use of bladed weapons. As a result of the response of the forces of internal order, the perpetrator of the event was injured in the lumbar region,” they said at the time. To date they have not published other information about the process.

Neighbors of the young woman explained on social networks that the man had mistreated other women in the past and that the authorities never did anything.

In April of this year, the Cuban ruler, Miguel Díaz-Canel, assured that there would be “zero tolerance” for sexist violence. More than a month he had to wait for a mother of three children at risk. On May 29, the woman filed a complaint with the Police against her partner.

“I am the mother of three children: the eldest is 19 and the twins are 8 years old. I separated from the father of the twins and he, in the wee hours of the morning, violated my home when we were sleeping and there were injuries. I went to the police and, Since May 29, he has been circulated for provisional detention. I have already gone seven times both to the Prosecutor’s Office and to the police and they have not just arrested him. I am still in hiding with my children, who cannot attend school, because we are afraid, ” said.

After multiple claims from civil society, observatories and independent media, the attacker was arrested at the end of last week.

Los observatories They reported this Tuesday that they are working on the verification of two other alleged femicides that also occurred last month. One of the victims was identified as Rafaela Yusmila Ramírez Chacón, 45, whose body was found on the morning of June 21 in the doorway of her house, in Baire, in Contramaestre, Santiago de Cuba.

The other case to which they refer is that of Elba Yipsi Pérez Álvarez, a 49-year-old woman who was found dead on Sunday, June 11, in her apartment in the José Martí District, in the city of Santiago de Cuba.

The names of the 12 women victims of feminicide in June are: Alianni Rodríguez (25 years old), Samira Lescar (31 years old), Yanet Mejías González (24 years old), Nelbys Leyva (37 years old), Dayris Fuentes Chávez, Karina Betancourt Maren ( 41 years old), Daimiris Medina (43 years old), Anisleysi Rodríguez Mesero (34 years old), Iliana Martínez Ávila, María Cristina Rodríguez Rodríguez (43 years old), Milsa (46 years old) and Yunisleive Fernández.
