A woman stole a delivery truck as the driver was in the back starting to unload a delivery to northwest DC on Tuesday.
Eric Stewart, who works for a cleaning supply company, said he was making a delivery to a church on New York Avenue.
“I was in the back, getting ready to unload, and as I was unloading, the truck started to move,” he recounted. “I turn around to see what’s going on, why my truck is moving, and I see a woman’s face in the mirror, and then she hits the accelerator, I back up, and I crash. I started chasing the truck.”
He flagged down a postal worker, who called 911.
US Secret Service officers spotted the truck and chased it to 16th Street near Meridian Hill Park, where it struck other cars.
The woman tried to run away but was stopped.
Stewart said that in his 25 years of doing this job, he’s never experienced anything like it.
“Someone jumps into my truck and drives off while I’m in the back,” he added. “Crazy.”
