A 42-year-old American nurse discovered that a spot she believed to be a birthmark was actually skin cancer. Texan Ilia Smith couldn’t remember when the mark had appeared, and the sign only started to worry her when it itched and started to bleed.

A biopsy confirmed that Ilia had a developing stage 2 melanoma. It was necessary to remove an area of four centimeters of skin from the thigh, with a depth of more than two centimeters.

She had already lived with the stain for at least 11 years when the surgery was performed. A professional colleague warned her in 2009 that the sign could be cancer, but Ilia thought that because she was black she could not have the skin disease. “I used to think I didn’t need to wear sunscreen,” she says in her social media.

Despite going untreated for so many years, Ilia’s cancer has not spread to other parts of her body. However, it ended up gaining so much depth that the nurse had to undergo plastic surgery to soften the scar.
