Woman who inspired Beb Reno sues Netflix for USD 170 million

LOS ANGELES.- A women British woman who claims to be the person who inspired the role of a stalker in the success of Netflix Beb Reno demand this Thursday -June 6- to the platform streaming for 170 million dollars in damages.

Fiona Harvey maintains that she is the real-life inspiration for Martha, the violent, fantasy and abusive character in comedian Richard Gadd’s hit miniseries.

The creators assure that the production is based on real life events, something that demand described as the biggest lie in the history of television.

“It is a lie by Netflix and the show’s creator, Richard Gadd, out of greed and desire for fame, a lie designed to attract more viewers, receive more attention, make more money and viciously destroy the life of the plaintiff, Fiona. Harvey,” stated the lawsuit filed in the state of California.

Netflix responds

“We intend to defend this matter vigorously and defend Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to AFP.

The seven-episode production, based on Gadd’s solo play, premiered on the platform in April and quickly became a huge global hit.

Beb Reno It is developed through a fictional version of the author, who meets a woman in a bar where he works.

In the following episodes he narrates the ordeal that Gadd is subjected to for years, to whom Martha sends thousands of emails, voice messages and text messages to harass him, his girlfriend and his family.

Martha, who in the series is portrayed as a convicted stalker, is also shown as a sexual harasser.

Miniseries fans track down Fiona Harvey

The British writer and actor told the press that he changed details about the character in an effort to protect his identity, but fans of the miniseries tracked her down and began contacting her on social media.

After the public exposure, Harvey has made appearances on British television denying that he bombarded Gadd with messages or that she attacked him and his girlfriend.

“The lies that the defendants told about Harvey to more than 50 million people around the world include that Harvey is a stalker twice sentenced to five years in prison and that Harvey sexually assaulted Gadd,” the lawsuit said. “The defendants told these lies and never stopped, because it was a better story than the truth and better stories make money.”

“And Netflix, a multibillion-dollar multinational entertainment company, is going streaming “He literally did nothing to confirm the true story that Gadd told,” the complaint added.

The lawsuit, which seeks $170 million in compensation, alleges defamation, intentional infliction of harm and emotional distress on the plaintiff, negligence, among others.
