Omar Sy welcomed the first figures for attendance in theaters, which show the interest of the public for this forgotten page in the history of France.

Great start for Skirmishers. Omar Sy welcomed the first figures for his film retracing the broken destiny of the Senegalese skirmishers, which posted more than 55,506 admissions (including 13,193 in previews) during its first day of operation.

“Thank you,” he wrote on Twitter. “Immense gratitude to those who went to see Skirmishers yesterday. The proof that together we can with our multiple memories tell the common story. You make me even more proud to have brought this film to you. You are my strength and my France.”

Forgotten by French politicians

Released this Wednesday after being presented in the Official Selection – but out of competition – of the Cannes Film Festival 2022, Skirmishers tells the story of a father and son torn from their Fulani village and sent to fight in France during the First World War.

Forgotten by French politicians for decades, the Senegalese skirmishers and their heirs still deplore a lack of recognition today, in particular because of lower pensions than those of their French brothers in arms.

“Today, our generation needs this story for our construction, to take history, to know how we are built in relation to these two countries,” Omar Sy, co-producer of the film, told AFP. .
