A reaction to the use of cream with corticosteroids left a 20-year-old woman bedridden in the United States. Natalie Wright developed the so-called red skin syndrome, a kind of withdrawal syndrome known as Topical Steroid Withdrawl (TWS). Symptoms of the condition include a burning sensation, flaking, swelling, redness, pus-filled lumps, insomnia, hair loss and depression. The disease is triggered by the inappropriate or abusive use of dermocorticoid creams, indicated to treat dermatitis.

Natalie had suffered from severe eczema since childhood, which led her to use ever-increasing doses of the product. Over time, the effect became the opposite: instead of making the itch disappear, she began to have such intense problems that, to alleviate the discomfort, she even scratched herself until she hurt her own skin.

“I felt like my skin was melting. It literally scratched me all day and sometimes I woke up with the sheets covered in blood and with pieces of my skin lying on it”, says the young woman, in interview with the Daily Mail.

pain and isolation

The pain became so intense that Natalie couldn’t even take a shower – the impact of the drops on her skin was similar to rubbing “lemon on an open wound”. Moving also hurt, forcing her to lie in bed all day. In the hardest phase of the reactions, due to the need to chew and move the face, even chewing solid food was difficult.

The American says that she works in sales, and has always suffered from people’s curiosity. “They don’t mean to be mean, but they ask what happened to my skin, if I’ve been burned or been in an accident. I feel horrible, sick, rejected, and a lot of the time, I’m treated like that,” she says.

Natalie hasn’t used the creams that left her in that condition since 2017, but she still suffers from itchy sores. “I’ve tried everything to treat my skin, I’ve visited several doctors, bought medication, gone on restrictive diets suspecting allergies. Nothing had worked so far,” she said.

miracle treatment

The young woman recently discovered a treatment that can only be done in Thailand and the UK and that improves the condition of her skin. Atmospheric cold plasma therapy was developed specifically for patients with TSW.

However, the treatment is expensive and depends on periodic travel. To help finance the expenses, Natalie launched a kitty online to raise the necessary US$30,000 – so far, around US$21,500 has been raised.

The first few sessions allowed her to get out of bed and lead a more active life, although her skin is still sore. The improvement allowed her to get married in March of this year.

“I am shocked by the treatment and how quickly I am seeing results. Even my eyelashes have grown back, it’s magical what’s happening,” she said. on your Instagram.
