YouTube is notorious for not being squeamish about adjusting its terms of service and monetization. You don’t be shy, even if it’s inevitable that you’ll offend some video makers. If the recent news that shorts can soon be monetized via advertising appeared to be extremely positive, there is now trouble about subsequent restrictions on many gaming videos.

The point here is that YouTube subsequently put age restrictions on many gaming videos. Consequently, this also severely limits the options for monetization. Many videos were then pulled directly from the monetization. Incidentally, YouTube has also adapted the approach to swear words here and treats more words equally here. Videos are primarily affected that already contain swear words in the first few seconds or present games with depictions of violence.

Creators of gaming content now have to live with the fact that videos featuring highly rated games and violent content may be subject to stricter age restrictions. There was an enormous outcry. I myself have understanding for both sides. From my point of view, it makes little sense if YouTube only allows realistic-looking depictions of violence for adults / makes them monetizable to a limited extent, but completely approves bloody shredding in games. So I think the step taken by the platform is understandable.

However, it is of course “difficult” to apply something like this afterwards without the video maker having been able to prepare for it. In the USA in particular, where depictions of violence are dealt with much more liberally than in Germany, there are now lively discussions among the video makers concerned. They may lose out on large amounts of revenue from older videos that they used to be able to rely on.

As is so often the case, YouTube gets scolding for the lack of communication. In the past, the platform has often changed the rules, but even left channels with millions of subscribers out in the cold when there were problems.
