Mexico City. The President of Ukraine, Volodímir Zelenski, called on Mexico to show its leadership and defend the global principles of peace and respect for the territories in the face of Russia’s warlike actions against the Ukrainian population.

By participating virtually in the meeting of the Mexico-Ukraine Friendship Group, which took place in the Chamber of Deputies, the Ukrainian president stressed that he had already proposed to the Latin American community the organization of a special summit to show their unity and position of global principles in defense of territorial integrity, peace and respect among peoples, and the sovereignty of nations.

“Ukraine has already proposed to the Latin American community to organize a special summit and show its unity and position on important global principles of territorial integrity, peace and respect between peoples,” Zelensky said with the support of a translator.

“I think that with the help of Mexico that could be much faster,” Zelenski said before deputies from the Citizen Movement and the PAN.

The Mexican government has said it wants to remain neutral in Ukraine’s war with Russia. Some Ukraine supporters have criticized President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for calling European arms shipments to kyiv misguided.

The call occurred at the initiative of the deputies that make up the “Mexico-Ukraine Friendship Group” in the lower house. Some of those legislators even visited the Ukrainian capital last year.

Zelenski raised the summit on February 24 on the first anniversary of the war by assuring that his country seeks to get closer to Latin America and Africa to counteract Moscow’s influence.

The president invited Mexico to support his plan to end the conflict, which, among other things, includes the withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory.

“I invite you to choose which point of the peace formula will allow Mexico to show its leadership?” he said.

The Mexican government has already condemned the invasion of Russia and on February 23 voted in favor of a United Nations resolution demanding the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

Controversy

During the meeting, in which 26 ambassadors from various countries were also present, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Santiago Creel Miranda, reiterated to Zelenski the official position of the Mexican State, which is expressed in a strong condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. from the UN Security Council and its respective General Assembly.

This upset the benches of Morena and allies. Through a bulletin they expressed that the Mexico-Ukraine forum does not represent the position of Congress. Ignacio Mier Velazco, leader of the Morena deputies explained that the meeting with Zelenski “does not represent the consensual position of the Chamber of Deputies.”
