Mozart's Requiem and Golijov's Oceana

It has been described as a New York treasure, one of the most important chamber choirs in the country. And this Sunday Música Viva NY closes its current season with a concert at All Souls NYC on the Upper East Side.

The program includes Mozart’s Requiem and the work Oceana by Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov based on a poem by Pablo Neruda.

In its almost 50 years of life, this institution directed since 2015 by the Mexican Alejandro Hernández-Valdez, has taken on the task of bringing works by contemporary composers to New Yorkers and making this music more accessible to the general public.

You can see images in a ‘post’ on social networks of Hernández-Valdez directing a rehearsal of Golijov’s complicated piece Oceana.

Part of these efforts include programs in collaboration with public schools and libraries, workshops and free concerts.

Philip Klint spoke with Hernandez-Valdez about these initiatives and Sunday’s concert.
