Paris 2024 seeks to stand out for sports and also for food

PARIS.- Freshly baked bread, as well as a selection of cheeses and vegetables will be part of the meals offered to athletes and visitors during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games —including, of course, a selection of gourmet dishes created by renowned French chefs.

It is expected that around 40,000 meals will be offered each day during the Games to the more than 15,000 athletes from 200 different countries in the Olympic Village.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy some sweets created especially for the occasion at some locations.

The food services company Sodexo Live!, which was selected to supervise the food supply in the village and the 14 venues of the Paris Games, confirmed that they created 500 recipes, which notably will be offered to more than 3,500 athletes in the Villa and that it will be the “largest restaurant in the world.”

“Of course there will be classics for athletes, like pasta,” said Nathalie Bellon-Szabo, CEO of Sodexo Live! But the food will have a French touch.

Athletes will also have access to “to-go” food stalls, including one dedicated to French food made by chefs.

Renowned French chef Amandine Chaignot, who runs a restaurant and cafe-bistro in Paris, revealed on Tuesday some recipes that are based on the iconic croissant.

“I wanted the recipe I suggested to represent the French terroir, but I wanted athletes to enjoy it at the same time,” he told The Associated Press. “It was obvious to me to make a croissant that I could also add a twist to. Then you have some artichoke puree, poached egg, truffle and cheese. It’s vegetarian and still makes your mouth water.”

Every day, between July 26 and August 11, a renowned chef — including some with Michelin stars — will cook for athletes in the Olympic Village.

In an effort to have more options, meals will focus on four regions: French, Asian, African and Caribbean, as well as international cuisine.

Paris organizers promised that the Games would be more sustainable and environmentally friendly, so they will use only reusable plates. In addition, the organizers confirmed that the meals will be made with seasonal products and that 80% come from France.

Plant-based food represents 60% of the food on the premises, including “a vegetarian hot dog,” said Philipp Würz, head of Food and Drink at the committee.

Additionally, in the urban park at Place de la Concorde, 100% vegetarian food will be offered to visitors — for the first time in history.
