Bundesliga
Things have been far from optimal for FC Bayern Munich since the restart. Although they are currently still at the top of the table, in the past three games, however, the German record champions never managed to get beyond a draw. The gap to Union Berlin, second in the table, has even shrunk to one point.
A circumstance that did not go unnoticed by the competition. In the run-up to the DFB Cup game against Union Berlin, former Bayern Munich and current Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovač couldn’t resist pointing his former employer.
Wolfsburg on course for the Europa League
Ahead of VfL Wolfsburg and Union Berlin’s clash on Tuesday night, the 51-year-old commented: “These are the strongest opponents we could draw. I think it’s easier to play in Munich than in Berlin at the moment.” You probably don’t like hearing that on Säbener Straße.

However, a look at the statistics underlines the statements made by the Wolfsburg trainer. Urs Fischer’s team continues to play above their standards, has lost just one game in the past ten games across all competitions and is therefore still well-deserved in second place in the table.
With VfL Wolfsburg, however, a team is traveling to Berlin-Köpenick that also has a long-lasting upward trend. After a mixed initial phase, VfL got on track more and more recently. Before the defeat in Bremen on Saturday, the Lower Saxony were unbeaten in the last ten league games.
Bayern still not on track after the World Cup break
Niko Kovač himself was head coach at FC Bayern Munich from July 2018 to November 3, 2019. After a 1:5 defeat in Frankfurt, however, the decision was made to kick the Croatian out. At the time, the German record champions were in fourth place in the Bundesliga after ten matchdays with just 18 points.

By next Sunday at the latest, Kovač will be able to judge whether it is currently easier to play against Union Berlin or FC Bayern Munich. Then VfL Wolfsburg doesn’t play in – but at least against Munich.
With the signing of Yann Sommer, Bayern bosses Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić have conjured up a luxury situation from a rather uncomfortable situation. The injury of DFB star Manuel Neuer in the middle of the season came at the wrong time, when Bayern have such high goals in the second half of the season, including in the Champions League. With Sommer, FCB now has two world-class keeper under contract. The only problem: the upcoming competition after Neuer’s return.
