Street vendors protest raids; they ask for permissions

After the raids on the streets of Queens and the Bronx, a group of street vendors in the city demonstrated against these initiatives and requested more permits to be able to work legally on the street.

This through the approval of the Street Vendor Reform legislative package, which seeks to open an access route that allows the delivery of more licenses.

With a workforce of almost 20,000, mostly immigrants, people of color and military veterans, street vendors represent a large group of informal workers.

Some vendors say politicians should be honest about the realities of getting a permit.

“Moya this week tells the public that there are laws to follow, and that vendors should apply for a license or permit. But if he is so affected by our work, why doesn’t he tell the public that there is no way to apply for the licenses, why don’t you tell the public that the waiting list is ridiculous, why don’t you say that they should reform the laws so that we have the opportunity to work properly with said licenses and permits,” said salesman Floriberto Díaz, referring to the councilman from Queens, Francisco Moya.

The Street Vendor Project organization, which acts to benefit street vendors, posted a message on social networks about what the vendor Díaz said.

“Floriberto, a street vendor who has received $6,000 in fines for simply selling tamales

“We saw this week that @CMFranciscoMoya said that providers should get a license. We agree!

“Why don’t you tell the press how impossible it is? Why don’t you reform the laws so we can get business licenses?” the message reads.

After the demonstration, the participants went to the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to demand licenses and permits, with the aim of demonstrating that it is impossible to obtain a sales license due to the current limit.
