MADRID.– The musician and singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat won on Wednesday Princess of Asturias Award for the Artsannounced the foundation that grants the awards.
In his more than 50-year career as a composer and performer, Serrat, who has given voice to iconic songs like Mediterranean o Today can be a great day He has received numerous awards, including 2014 Person of the Year from the Latin Recording Academy.
The 80-year-old Barcelona musician, who was a pioneer of what was called ‘nova can catalana’ in the 1960s, has recorded more than 30 albums throughout his vast career in Spain and Latin America. They officially left the stage after a last concert in December 2022 at the Palau Sant Jordi in his hometown.

Serrat takes over from American actress Meryl Streep, who won the award last year. Among the winners are also the flamenco dancers Carmen Linares and María Pags, the English director Peter Brook and the American filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.
The award, which has a financial award of 50,000 euros (53,000 dollars), is the first of the eight awarded annually by the Princess of Asturias Foundation and which are presented in October in a ceremony held in Oviedo, in the north of Spain.
In the coming weeks, the winners in the other categories will be announced, including Literature, Science, Sports, International Cooperation or Concord.
