In December this year, eight people lost their lives, compared to five in December 2021. This is shown by the National Road Administration’s preliminary accident figures.

– I am concerned about the development. We have set ourselves ambitious goals for traffic safety. The work against traffic deaths continues unabated. A traffic accident with fatalities or serious injuries is one too many, says road director Ingrid Dahl Hovland.

Among those killed this year, five have lost their lives on electric scooters and two on electric bikes

Most men

Every third person killed in 2022 is aged 65 or older. Three out of four deaths in 2022 are men.

– With an aging population, this is a worrying development. We must use our experience in traffic in a positive way, says Hovland.

Motorcycle accidents claimed 21 lives last year. That was six more than the previous year and the highest figure since 2016.

– A dark year for road safety

Most fatal accidents occurred in May, June and August. The most common type of accident is head-on collisions with 42 deaths, and downhill skirmishes with a total of 33 deaths.

Two of the traffic fatalities this year were children under the age of 16.

– The year we have now put behind us has been a dark year for road safety. Far too many never got to where they were going, says transport minister Jon-Ivar Nygård in one press release.

– The accident picture we have had in 2022 is very worrying and is a clear reminder that we must continue to keep the pressure up in traffic safety work, he adds.

The number of people seriously injured in traffic has not increased, according to the Norwegian Road Administration.
