If we can’t complain about something in 2023, it’s all the music that has come out in the first months of the year. And it is that many bands and artists that we love released very raffled songs and records. However, around here we are excited because The Mars Volta is back with a very special album: May God Curse My Heart.

As you will remember, after almost a decade, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López revived The Mars Volta with a small tour (which even went through CDMX) and they also released their seventh record material. Although yes, both made it very clear to us that this great project returned for a long time.

Here are 5 reasons to listen to ‘May God Curse My Heart’ by The Mars Volta

And it is that The Mars Volta announced with hype and cymbal new dates for 2023, where of course, they included Mexico once again. But among the band’s most exciting plans is the release of May God Curse My Heart, an acoustic album and something completely different from what the band has us used to.

Fortunately, this April 21st this record material by Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala is finally available –and complete–. But if you haven’t heard it yet and are hesitating to give it a chance, Here we tell you some reasons why you can’t miss this great album by The Mars Volta.

On this album we hear a new facet of The Mars Volta

When we think of The Mars Volta, their punchy songs full of changes, rhythms and multiple instruments always come to mind, as well as their energetic live performances. However, for May God Curse My Heart, the band lowers the decibels to show us another facet that we did not know (at all).

And to be honest, it’s wonderful that in these times, where the music industry is constantly changing and the trends are totally different, a band like The Mars Volta dares to release an acoustic record when part of their sound has almost always been distorted. The truth is, it is appreciated that they have taken the risk of leaving their comfort zone a bit to give us a very intimate vision of this great group.

In ‘Que Dios Te Maldita Mi Corazón’ we know the origin of the songs of ‘The Mars Volta’

Another point that we consider important to listen to May God Curse My Heartis that thanks to this album, we can check the origin of the songs of the self-titled album by The Mars Volta, because just like any other band, we are sure that Omar and Cedric composed these great songs with an idea in their heads and accompanied by a classical guitar.

For fans of hueso colorado or for any music lover, it will be fascinating to listen to how the songs that ended up appearing on The Mars Voltabecause in some cases, they sound very different from the versions that appeared in September 2022. So if you are curious music lovers, you will love this and it will blow your mind at the same time.

The Mars Volta show us (once again) that they are great musicians

It goes without saying that since its origins -and we’re talking before The Mars Volta-, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López made it very clear that they were musical masterminds, some true geniuses. However, it never hurts to reaffirm it and May God Curse My Heart is the perfect example of this.

And we don’t say it lightly. because both the vocal interpretation of Cedric (which feels very close, almost as if singing in front of you) as the impressive arrangements that Omar put together show us (once again) that they are great musicians and that we greatly missed that they worked together on The Mars Volta.

Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala return to their Latin influences

Something that we have always liked about the members of The Mars Volta is that they have never denied their originsbecause despite living in the United States from a very young age, they have always brought out their latin influences and they are proud of that. However, in May God Curse My Heart they took this to the next level.

Why do we say it? Well, it’s obvious that The Mars Volta took many elements of traditional Mexican, Puerto Rican and Caribbean music to record this acoustic album.. And the net is that those instruments and rhythms combined with the arriving lyrics sound brutal, as if they had been written to be played and interpreted in this way.

We don’t know how long it will take The Mars Volta to release “new music”

Last but not least among the reasons to listen May God Curse My Heart It is something that will surely make them run to play it, well it could be what little “new music” The Mars Volta releases in a while.

And we do not say it because they are going to rest the band again, but because Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala will be on tour for much of 2023 and most likely will not have time to enter the studio and record recent songs. So now you know, you have to listen until you drop to this album by The Mars Volta, have you already checked it out?
