It was released more than ten years ago and it is one of the most played games in the world, you must have heard of the famous League of Legends. Developed by the team of Riot Games, which are also the origin of Teamfight Tactics and Valorant, the MOBA has dominated the competitive scene for several years now. Its success is such that it has been able to afford to go beyond the sphere of video games by offering real music albums from their universe, but also a Netflix animated series whose success is well established: the famous Arcane.
Only, as we revealed to you two weeks ago, Riot Games’ servers have recently been the victims of an attack from a certain hacker.and the latter succeeded in recovering source code of League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics as well as that of their anti-cheat software. If the latter were found in the wild, this could in particular mean that new cheat software could see the light of day, in fact impacting the gaming pleasure of all players. According to our colleagues from Esports Heaven, the hacker would have managed to recover no less than 572,000 files, for a total weight of 72.4 GB.
The ransom of glory
Obviously, the Riot Games communication team has already indicated at the time of the events that no data relating to the personal information of the players has been recovered by the hacker., and that they would not agree to pay the price demanded by their malefactor. When he asked them for the astronomical sum of 10 million dollars, the latter then fell back on the black market, where he now offers the fruit of his larceny for a relatively more modest price: 700,000 dollars.
A sum that could make League of Legends fans smile, who have been complaining about the game’s incessant bugs for years. On Reddit, the author of the top comment on the subject (EternalDeath) even quips when stating that it makes “a lot for a bowl of spaghetti”, referring to a recurring joke that fans of the MOBA will understand.
Note, however, that if the hacker were to find a buyer, it would then be much more difficult for Riot Games to solve the problem. Without really being able to confirm if he is telling the truth, the latter also recently declared that even if he did not have the personal data of the players, he would have access to the command to give RP (the game’s paid currency) for free to anyone. Bluff to make Riot Games react or not, only time will tell.
