Members of the small group L’Oriflamme Rennes had tried to cancel the event organized by the municipality of Saint-Senoux.

The municipality of Saint-Senoux (Ille-et-Vilaine) denounced the “actions” of the far right after the disruption of a reading workshop for children on gender identity, Saturday, May 13, by a small group of ultra-right who claimed this action. Members of L’Oriflamme Rennes, dressed in black and hooded, with banners and smoke bombs, had demonstrated in front of the media library, where a reading by drag queens was organized. A similar controversy had broken out in Lamballe (Côtes-d’Armor) last January.

In a statement titled “In our children, teach our roots, do not impose drag queens” published on its Twitter page, L’Oriflamme Rennes condemned “a moment of propaganda orchestrated by the LGBT lobby (sic) in order to mold the consciences of the young generations still devoid of any critical spirit”. Despite this disruption, the workshop was able to take place in this town of around 1,800 inhabitants, located 30 km south of Rennes. The municipality explained that it wanted “addressing a diversity of contemporary themes” et “breaking down stereotypes”.

The presence of elected officials and residents “come in support” et “many cops” a permis “to ensure the safety of the artists, children and their parents as well as the smooth running of the show”, said the town hall on Tuesday. She also pointed the finger at the National Rally, which would have distributed leaflets in the area. “The remarks of the RN, which brilliantly combine lies and demagoguery, set fire to the powder”says the municipality.
