A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to ten years in prison for selling the fentanyl-laced heroin that killed actor-producer Michael K. Williams in 2021.
Irvin Cartagena has also received five years of supervised release, for a crime of conspiracy to distribute heroin, fentanyl and fentanyl analogues, according to a statement from the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and has been collected by CNN.
“Michael K. Williams tragically lost his life after using the drugs Cartagena sold him. Although his product had already claimed one life, Cartagena and his accomplices continued to sell potentially lethal fentanyl-laced heroin,” said US Attorney Damian Williams. it’s a statement.
Williams added that “this office will tenaciously continue our enforcement efforts against unscrupulous drug dealers who distribute poison and exacerbate the scourge of the fentanyl epidemic.”
Cartagena, also known as “Ojos Verdes,” was one of four men accused of being part of a drug trafficking network that sold drugs to the cartel and already pleaded guilty to the offense in early April of this year.
Prosecutors alleged that Cartagena was the person who conducted “the one-on-one transaction” with Williams just before the actor died of an accidental overdose, and yet Cartagena and his accomplices continued to sell fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight. in residential apartment buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
Following Williams’ death, Cartagena fled to Puerto Rico, where he was eventually arrested in February 2022.
Williams was found dead in his New York City apartment in 2021 in what the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office ruled to be an accidental overdose, at which time he was 54 years old.
The actor is mainly known for his role as Omar Little in the HBO series The Wire, but he also participated in films such as 12 Years a Slave, Pure Vice or Triple 9 and in series such as The Sopranos and Broadwalk Empire.
