SPD leader Saskia Esken has defended Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD), who has come under criticism. This “really took on a huge task,” said Esken on Monday in the ZDF “Morgenmagazin”.

She is “very happy that Minister Lambrecht is taking on this responsibility” and believes that it is important “that we maintain continuity there.”

When asked whether Lambrecht would still be Minister of Defense in six months, Esken replied: “I assume that the entire cabinet will still be working in six months.”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) “said very clearly that he trusts all his ministers and that he also works well with them.” That will remain the case.

A video with New Year’s greetings from the minister, which was perceived as unfortunate, had increased the pressure on Lambrecht in the past few days.

Opposition politicians questioned her suitability and called for her resignation. The SPD leadership has been advising on the central projects in the new year at a meeting at the beginning of the year since Sunday. (AFP)
