A pregnant woman was critically injured and a man is wounded after two men armed with assault rifles opened fire on a parked car in southeast DC early Thursday, police said. The search for the shooters continues.

The woman and man were shot multiple times in the 300 block of 37th Street SE around 11:20 a.m., according to authorities. The woman was in the passenger seat of a silver sedan and the man was in the driver’s seat.

After being shot, the man drove them less than a mile north to Minnesota Avenue and Dix Street NE, near a McDonald’s. They were found there and later rushed to a hospital.

The silver sedan could be seen with bullet holes in the windshield and at least one window.

The woman is in critical condition, acting Deputy Chief Executive Andre Wright told reporters.

“Our prayers are with mom as she is under the doctor’s care. We are hopeful that they both get ahead, ”she expressed, referring to her unborn child.

The shooting was caught on video. Police are searching for the men and a white four-door sedan. Anyone with potentially relevant information should contact the police.

Video not immediately released by police shows two men armed with “assault rifles” getting out of the white sedan on 37th Street SE and running toward the silver sedan, Wright said.

At the time of the incident, several people were outside.

“This is a brazen act. It happened in the middle of the day,” Wright said.

The man sped up and was able to reach Minnesota Avenue and Dix Street NE before the car came to a stop. His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening, according to Wright.

Based on preliminary information, police believe the man and woman were the intended victims. It was not clear if they knew the shooters.

“From what we know and what we could see on the video, this was a specific event,” Wright concluded.
