Adapted from the eponymous novel by British historian and columnist Ben Macintyre (translated into French under the title of “The Spy Who Betrayed His Friends”, Ixelles Editions, 2014), this mini-series retraces a dark affair inspired by a story truth that traumatized Britain: Kim Philby, the famous double agent in the service of Moscow, betrayed Her Majesty’s secret service for three decades, from the 1930s to his flight to Moscow in 1963.
Two stories intertwine: on the one hand, the discovery of this forfeiture by the British forces, on the other, the arm wrestling between two friends “for life”, the presumed mole, Kim Philby (Guy Pearce, as always excellent) and his comrade Nicholas Elliott (Damian Lewis, the actor revealed by “Homeland”, once again very fair), responsible for unmasking him. We witness, fascinated, a dizzying back and forth in space and time: the budding complicity of the two spies on the rubble of London in the middle of the Second World War, their last meeting in Beirut at the height of the Cold War , their debriefing with their respective employers.
