After protests for climate protection and a rapid exit from coal, climate protectors in Potsdam are planning further actions. “Staudenhof, coal exit in Lusatia, Mühlrose excavation: We have enough topics on the list,” said climate activist Jana Schelte from Extinction Rebellion Potsdam on Sunday. An estimated 200 people walked peacefully through the city center on Saturday, according to the police. The protest march led from the SPD state headquarters via the town hall to the office of the Greens and ended in the state parliament.

The Staudenhof is also located nearby, which the city plans to demolish. The climate protectors are protesting against a new building, which they believe would be expensive and harmful to the climate. With a refurbishment, the rents would be cheaper in the long run, said climate activist Schelte. With the demolition, one of the few houses in Potsdam’s center with affordable rents would disappear.

Schelte also criticized the fact that Brandenburg is still sticking to the coal phase-out in 2038 and called for a stop to expropriations for fossil projects such as in Mühlrose on the Saxony-Brandenburg border. The district will be relocated for the Nochten opencast mine, which will ensure the supply of coal to the Boxberg and Schwarze Pumpe power plants until the end of 2038. According to the energy company Leag, a majority of the approximately 200 Mühlroser residents have decided to move to the neighboring municipality of Schleife.

The route of the demonstrators also passed the Barberini Museum on Saturday. On October 23, a woman and a man spilled a liquid on Claude Monet’s (1840-1926) painting “Stacks of Grain” covered with protective glass in the museum. The group Last Generation admitted to the crime and spoke of an attack with mashed potatoes.

According to Schelte, this action has once again promoted the debate on climate protection. “You can have whatever Last Generation actions you want. What they manage to do is force everyone to position themselves on what they find more important: mashed potatoes on a pane of glass or climate protection.” (dpa)
