New York.- Stephen Giraldo was charged in Queens (NYC) with attempted murder and endangerment of minors, among other crimes, for allegedly intentionally running over his wife while their three young children were in the truck, and then stabbing her .
According to the New York police, the defendant allegedly sat in a Ford Explorer truck outside the building in Flushing where his wife Sophia Giraldo lives, apparently waiting for her, with their sons ages 6, 9 and 11 on board.
As she left the building and headed for the van around 5:15 a.m., Giraldo allegedly ran over her as her children looked on in horror, according to surveillance footage.
Giraldo also apparently stabbed her after running over her, police said. Her wife was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital in critical condition and her husband was taken into custody at the scene.
The children were not injured. It was not immediately clear who was in charge of her care, NBC News said.
Sophia had filed for divorce in August, according to public court records, and runs a counseling business aimed at helping victims of domestic abuse. The 41-year-old describes herself as “a Survivor of Betrayal-Trauma and Abuse” and hosts a podcast called “Unfiltered and Free”, in which she has shared her struggles in her “toxic” marriage, just days before. that she was attacked yesterday outside her home on Parsons Boulevard near Franklin Avenue, the New York Post detailed.
In addition to attempted murder and child endangerment, Giraldo was charged with assault, reckless endangerment and possession of weapons. All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
In a similar case, in February of this year a Hispanic man was sentenced to 23 years in prison after pleading guilty to fatally running over his wife and stabbing her with a machete in front of their grandchildren, while being a religious pastor in New York.
