The preliminary investigation after the large police strike at several locations in Sundsvall at the end of January is very extensive.

Weapons, explosives and narcotics were seized at several addresses and the suspicions include, among other things, preparation for murder, preparation for public dangerous devastation, serious weapons crime and serious drug crime. A total of 14 people are in custody in the case, where the prosecution hopes to file charges in July.

Preliminarily, the main hearing in the case will be held in Attunda district court in Sollentuna for security reasons. According to deputy chief prosecutor Karin Everitt, who leads the preliminary investigation together with chamber prosecutor Henrik Wallin, the start of the trial is scheduled for week 31, that is, at the turn of the month July-August.

Law change

Nine of the 14 detainees are under the age of 20, and three of them are 17-year-olds. On 1 July 2021, a new law entered into force which, among other things, means that persons under the age of 18 should not be detained for longer than three months. Thereafter, the deprivation of liberty should take place in other forms, such as in closed Sis homes.

But exceptions can be made to the rule, if the suspected crime is particularly serious and if “extraordinary reasons” for detention exist for that reason.

This week, the Stockholm district court released two teenage bombing suspects at large after they had been in custody for three months. A decision that the Svea Court of Appeal, however, overturned. “There is a risk that the suspects, by removing evidence or in some other way, complicate the investigation of the matter,” writes the Court of Appeal. And: “It is currently evident that satisfactory monitoring cannot be arranged”.

– It is clear that we are looking at this case and making considerations, says Karn Everitt to SVT regarding the investigation in Sundsvall.
