Announced a few days ago, the visit of the Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, Lieutenant General Saïd Chanegriha, to France, will begin today, Monday January 23, 2023.

The latter intervened at the invitation of Lieutenant-General Thierry Berkhard, Chief of Staff of the French Armed Forces. This visit is part of the strengthening of cooperation between the People’s National Army and the French armies. The visit will also allow both parties to discuss issues of common interest.

Chief of Staff Saïd Chanegriha and his French counterpart met on August 25 and 26, 2022, during French President Emmanuel Macron’s trip to Algeria. They had also discussed during this interview the security situation in the Sahel and the strengthening of cooperation between the armies of the two countries.

It is important to note that this visit is symbolic, because the last was that of the former Algerian Chief of Staff, the late Ahmed Gaïd Saleh in May 2006. Since then, no boss of the Algerian army has visited in France on an official visit.

When will President Tebboune visit France?

After the visit of the French President, Emmanuel Macron, to Algeria in August last year, many are waiting for the visit of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune to France.

This visit will take place during the month of May 2023. Indeed, it was during a call between the two heads of state that the latter was confirmed.

After months of tension, Macron’s visit to Algeria last August improved the bilateral relationship.

It is in this sense that at the end of 2022, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune had welcomed the new “relationship of trust” between France and Algeria, announcing a State visit to France in 2023, in an interview he gave to the French daily Le Figaro.

Another file had distorted the bilateral relationship between the two countries, the halving in the fall of 2021 of the granting of visas to Algeria, Paris reproaching Algiers for not readmitting its nationals expelled from France. The French government had finally announced in mid-December a return to normal for Algerian nationals.
