Airports Council International recently reported on its record on international air traffic. Moreover, this organization has drawn up the ranking of the busiest airports in the world, but also on the African continent.

The first figures from the 2022 report indicate that with the resumption of travel activities, global passenger traffic has reached nearly 7 billion trips, which represents an increase of 53.5% compared to the results seen in 2021. And an increase 73.8% compared to 2019 data.

According to Airports Council International, this ranking of the busiest airports in the world is based on a set of criteria and the most recent data. In particular, passenger traffic, freight movements and aircraft movements.

Ranking of the busiest airports in 2022: Algiers airport in the top 10 in Africa

Globally, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport tops this ranking with 93.7 million travelers, followed by Dallas Fort Worth Airport in second place, Denver Airport and O ‘Chicago Hare.

Moreover, in the Airports Council International ranking, the busiest precinct in 2022 is by far Cairo International Airport, Egypt, which recorded 20 million passengers. In second place is OR Tambo International Airport, near Johannesburg in South Africa, with 14.7 million passengers passing through this airport structure. South Africa also occupies third place in this ranking. And this, thanks to Cape Town International Airport, which welcomed more than 7.8 million passengers in 2022.

Africa’s fourth busiest airport is Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, Morocco, with 7.6 million passengers handled last year. In addition, Egypt also made another entry to place itself in 5th place in this ranking, thanks to its Hurghada airport. 6th place then belongs to Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As for the 7th and 8th positions, these are occupied by Jomo Kenyatta Airports in Kenya, Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, Nigeria.

Regarding the international airport of Houari Boumedienne, it occupies the 9th place in this ranking. Indeed, Algiers airport saw its air traffic increase by 190.7% in 2022, gaining six places, with a total of 6.3 million passengers. The ranking of the busiest African airports is completed by Nigeria’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, which handled six million passengers in 2022.
