After the words of producer Jon Landau (Avatar) on Alita 2, the director of the first film, Robert Rodriguez, speaks. The sequel finally in the works?

Even if Alita Battle Angel was barely profitable, to the point of not having had the right to a second part in the process, it is a precious film for those who worked on it. But also with the public who found their account in this live-action adaptation of the cult manga Gunnm. A project abandoned by James Cameron, who was to take care of it, because of the titanic construction site on the new Avatar films.

A few years later, the hope of a sequel is reborn. Alita 2 “soon” in filming?

Soon the green light for Alita 2?

Alita 2 will it come out one day or another? This is the question that many spectators ask themselves. At the time of the first film, the question was quickly answered. With a worldwide box office of 405 million dollars, for a budget of 170 million (just for the feature film), the adventures of Alita did not make Fox pundits happy. The production company which, at this time, had not yet been acquired by Disney.

And against all odds, nothing seems lost. Jon Landau, producer and loyal collaborator of James Cameron, has confirmed discussions with director Robert Rodriguez. « There’s this little movie Alita: Battle Angel that we’d like to come back to for a sequel. I discussed it with Robert, and hopefully it should happen. But I won’t give you a date, otherwise it might fall on me » via Deadline.

Robert Rodriguez (one night in hell, Machete, The Faculty…) is amazed at the enthusiasm for a sequel. He’s also hopeful, conjuring up scenarios for at least two new movies, but not putting the cart before the horse.

It’s crazy that other people, other than us, are asking for a sequel to the point of creating a movement. You know, I didn’t think it would ever be possible. Because when the first movie came out, Disney had just bought out Fox. Everyone, including our marketing team, was gone when Alita Battle Angel was released. After that, Fox didn’t make any more movies for years, because Disney prioritized its own stuff. But now that I’ve seen a few Fox productions come out, it gives me hope.

When Jon Landau talked about it again, James Cameron and I discussed the fact that we still wanted to offer a sequel to Alita. Besides, he has already written the outline of the screenplay for a second and third film, so there is plenty to do. So, yes, we hope that happens. But for now, there is nothing definitive.

Avatar 2, a precious help for the future

With the phenomenal success of Avatar 2, James Cameron is also in a strong position to negotiate with Disney. The director has indeed succeeded in defeating almost all of the Marvel films. There is only Avengers Endgame that resists despite everything. And that’s without mentioning all the other movies, outside of the MCU, that never reached the astronomical numbers of the Avatar sequel.

But Alita especially shares a very close link with the Avatar saga on a technical level. During another interview, producer Jon Landau said that Alita would not have been possible without Avatar and vice versa.. “I think Avatar taught us that it’s possible to achieve more nuance and subtlety in the facial expression of humanoid characters whose emotions we want to show. Alita wouldn’t have been possible without what we did on Avatar. Avatar 2 The Way of Water wouldn’t be what it is without Alita. Now let’s take this new acquired experience so that it benefits Alita 2 » via Screenrant.

A sequel with the same actors? For the main heroine, yes. Landau added that he is in discussions with Rosa Salazar (Brand New Cherry Flavor on Netflix).
