Although many don’t even remember him anymore, Mario Villanueva is still in the boat for money laundering (after serving a sentence for drug trafficking)… however, perhaps he could be close to being released from prison.

Well, if the law allows it… Now that he was in Quintana Roo, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) was questioned about the future of the entity’s former governor, Mario Villanueva.

Without giving it much thought, the president assured that the ex-president can be considered pardoned. “He has amnesty, he has a pardon from us,” AMLO pointed out in an interview offered from the vehicle in which he was transported.

According to the president, the amnesty that Mario Villanueva would deserve is for nothing other than his deteriorated state of health, added to his age. “He’s an older man” AMLO justified. “If he committed crimes, he already paid.”

For the president, Villanueva “has been locked up for a long time” for the crimes he committed… so it’s time for him to be released. “You always have to think, in a human way.”

Mario Villanueva and the global emergency by COVID

Well, well… let’s remember that the former governor of Quintana Roo He was arrested in 2001, accused of trafficking cocaine from Cancun to the United States, crime for which he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

After serving said sentence, immediately He was reapprehended and sent to the United States, where he was requested to settle accounts for money laundering.… and there, another several years of punishment were given to him again. In 2017 he was returned to Mexico, where – since 2020 – he was allowed to go home… because his health was at risk, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

And with the latter is where the detail is: with the end of the international emergency due to the pandemic, Mario Villanueva is expected to be returned to serve his sentence. Hence, in Quintana Roo they ask themselves “what will become of the ex-governor?”

“It is a matter of just technically reviewing if there are no pending processes, If he is already sentenced, he can receive amnesty, and I am in a position to grant that amnesty”, AMLO advanced.

It is not the first time that President López Obrador is considering the possibility of getting Mario Villanueva out of jail… but now it does seem closer to that being done.
