An 11-year-old British girl has been shot dead and her father critically injured in north-western France when their Dutch neighbor fired on them, authorities said.

The family was in the garden of their home on Saturday in the town of Saint-Herbot when the neighbor appeared with a gun, according to the initial investigation.

At ten o’clock on Saturday night, the police intervened “after some shots,” public prosecutor Carine Halley, from the neighboring city of Quimper, said in a statement on Sunday.

The minor was found dead on the spot while her father suffered serious injuries, according to the prosecutor.

He said the mother is not in mortal danger, while a second child was unharmed but “in shock,” Halley added.

The attacker was identified as a 71-year-old Dutch retiree.

According to the prosecutor, apparently “there was a years-long dispute between the two neighbors over land adjacent to their properties.”

The attacker and his wife turned themselves in to authorities and remain under arrest.
