The latest version of Google’s mobile operating system is only installed on 5.2% of smartphones worldwide. Despite a visibly low number, the adoption speed for Android 13 is a marked improvement over previous versions.

Are you desperately waiting to update your device to Android 13? Provided that it is one day eligible, rest assured, you are far from alone in still using an old version of Android. Released last August, Android 13 is currently only installed on 5.2% of all Android devices worldwide. In any case, this is the figure officially provided by Google. The Mountain View firm has just updated its graph summarizing the adoption statistics of the different versions of its mobile operating system. All of this data, which was once shared directly by Google on its website, is now only accessible within Android Studio.

Adoption speed still low, but improving

If the percentage of adoption of Android 13 is still low, it is a marked improvement compared to previous versions of the OS. And Google can thank manufacturers like Samsung or OnePlus who pushed the update very quickly to their devices.

By comparison, Android 12 released in October 2021 is only installed on 18.9% of devices, an increase in adoption since it reached only 13.5% last August. Android 11 still drives 24.4% of devices, Android 10 nearly 20% and Android 9 (Pie) still 13.2%. The numbers are finally starting to melt with Android Oreo dropping below 10%. Older versions of Android are quietly ending their lives, with Nougat still being used on 3.7% of devices, Marshmallow on 2.8%, Lollipop on 2.1% and KitKat on 0.7%. While it still represented 0.3% in the last ranking, Android JellyBean was definitely taken out of the table. In the end, almost half of the global Android smartphone fleet runs on Android 11 or higher.
