After Martha Delgado’s resignation from the Foreign Ministry, yesterday Bernardo Aguilar did the same. In this way, the SRE is left without a director general for European affairs.
The foregoing was confirmed by Aguilar himself through an extensive letter posted on his social networks. According to said letter, the now former official was in his position since January 1, 2019.
“During the period in charge of the General Directorate for Europe (DGE), efforts were continued to strengthen and enrich Mexico’s relationship with European countries and organizations, promoting constructive political dialogue and maintaining an active presence in the region”says Bernardo Aguilar.
Although it was not even necessary, in his resignation letter Aguilar boasts to Marcelo Ebrard the long list of what, for him, was the highlight of his administration. Little things, such as the organization of several visits by European leaders to the country.
As Marcelo Ebrard’s ex-subordinate recalls (in the SRE, because it seems that he will continue under his direction, but now in another field), with him the visit of the president of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, was organized… and just, if we are talking about state leaders.
What there was a lot of was visits from ministers. For example, the one from Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel; the foreign minister of Germany, Heiko Maas, as well as that of the Netherlands, Stef Blok.
In one of the last commissions of Bernardo Aguilar in the General Directorate for Europe, He headed the search team that was sent to Turkey after the terrible earthquake on February 6. “This participation earned me the honorable decoration for ‘Distinguished Humanitarian Service’, awarded by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan”.
Although he does not mention it directly in the letter, Aguilar hints that he will continue under the orders of Marcelo Ebrard… no longer as an official, but as part of the foreign minister’s team in his attempt to win Morena’s presidential candidacy.
