Anthony Hopkins turned 85 and took to social media to celebrate 47 years of sobriety and shared an uplifting message for those battling alcoholism.

The Oscar-winning actor began by saying he wasn’t trying to be pushy, but wanted to be helpful to those who may be dealing with addiction the same way he was decades ago.

“I am a recovering alcoholic, and for you, I know that there are people struggling in this time of cancellation, hate and disengagement, children who are bulliedHopkins said. “I say this: Be kind to yourself. be nice. Stay out of the loop of toxicity with people if they offend you. Live your life. be proud of your life”.

He went on to explain that 47 years ago he was in “dire straits” and probably didn’t have long to live, until he was lucky enough to admit one day that something was wrong with him.

“But I didn’t realize it was a type of mental, physical, emotional condition called alcoholism or addiction,” he continued. “I am not a drug expert. I am not an expert in anything. I don’t know anything except that I’ve found a life where I’m not intimidated by anyone.”

Hopkins had a message for young people who are being looked down on: “don’t listen to them”.

He also encouraged anyone struggling with addiction, or any problem today, to talk to someone they respect, whether it’s a counselor or, for those in need, a 12-step program.

“There are 12-step programs all over the world,” the “The Father” actor said. “Every city, every small town, every community, has 12-step programs that can help you. It costs nothing, but it will give you a whole new life.”

He concluded by saying that it is a “sinner”, just like everyone else, but being sober helped him have the life he has today.

45 years ago today, I had a wake up call. I was headed for disaster drinking myself to death”, Hopkins said in a video in 2020. “I got a message, a little thought that said: Do you want to live or die? And I said, I want to live. And suddenly the relief came and my life has been incredible.

A few years ago, the prolific movie star opened up about his struggles with alcohol abuse with Brad Pitt for the magazine Interview. Both interpreters, who have been friends since the movie “Do You Know Joe Black?”, They spoke candidly about their problems with alcohol and about details of their lives after giving up this addiction.

At the same meeting, Hopkins wondered about the meaning of making certain choices in life: “I don’t know why I drank,” he said. “Now I look back and think: ‘It wasn’t bad, but I don’t want to do it again.’ I caused harm back then and I apologize to people for doing what I did. It is part of being alive. You have to forget and just move on”.
