The National Directorate of Municipal Works (DOM) constitutes a solid operational component of different projects on a national scale. One of the priorities of said institution is support for the improvement of school infrastructure.
In this sense, the DOM crews are intervening in schools as part of the reform of the My New School educational system of the Government of President Nayib Bukele. This reform includes the construction and complete renovation of 5,150 schools.
The works are currently being carried out in schools in the three areas of the country, which are the Puerto de La Libertad Nursery School Center, in La Libertad; El Matazano School Center, Santa Rosa Guachipilín, in Santa Ana; State of Israel School Center, Nahuizalco, in Sonsonate; Ciro Brito School Center, Nahuizalco, in Sonsonate; José Ovidio García Center School, Chalchuapa, in Santa Ana; Caserío El Ciprés School Center, San Miguel, in San Miguel; Caserío Agua Fría School Center, El Zapote canton, Jucuarán, in Usulután; Ojos de Agua School Center, Ojos de Agua, in Chalatenango, and Sonia Maricela Aguilar Orellana School Center, Acajutla, in Sonsonate.
Said educational reform is part of the largest investment in the country’s history, which includes the demolition, construction, repair, change of furniture and modernization of educational centers in a period of five years with the support of government entities and international financial entities. .
The DOM reported that schools are intervened according to the level of damage they have due to the abandonment they suffered for decades. “The objective of the Government of President Nayib Bukele is to create safe educational centers so as not to put the lives of students and teachers at risk,” they reported.
The head of the National Directorate of Municipal Works (DOM), Álvaro O’Byrne, stated that next year, with the My New School project, a change will be made in all the educational centers in the country:
“It is a commitment by President Nayib Bukele to renew the infrastructure of all educational centers nationwide.”
According to O’Byrne, the DOM also communicates with the educational directors to find out the main needs or effects of the schools that are intervened. “There are schools that have to be completely demolished,” she pointed out.
