“Adopt strict policies against hardcore pornography and sexually explicit content, as Reddit is unable to adequately verify the age or consent of individuals depicted in such content,” read your letter, which was sent to colleagues at the US magazine motherboard present. It also demands that the platform “block users who upload sexually explicit material, particularly if the material depicts child sexual abuse or non-consensual intimate images shared.”
The letter, which appears to be the first stage in a longer campaign, came from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), formerly known under the more obvious-sounding name Morality in Media. The association has worked to shut down a number of perfectly legal adult sites, banned PornHub from Instagram and was the driving force behind legislation passed against sex workers and porn performers.
Ban currently unlikely
Reddit is one of the biggest social media platforms where users can also share adult and porn content. All other big offers have long since enforced strict rules against it. One of the big shock waves came when Tumblr banned all adult content from its platform in 2018.
There are currently few users and moderators on Reddit who assume that the operators of the platform will comply with the demands. However, if the lobby group remains persistent and puts pressure on for a long time, it is quite possible that the management will give in just to finally have some peace. But that shouldn’t do much good for the moral guardians. A Reddit moderator summed up the expected consequence: The corresponding content will then probably be shifted to places on the net where there is significantly less moderation.
