For more conscious shopping, let’s try to save time and money by learning all the tricks to evaluate the products we find on supermarket shelves. Here’s what to watch out for according to experts.

Colorful slogans and convincing writings do not always guarantee the quality of food and household products which, every day, we place in the shopping cart. According to a recent survey, six out of ten Italians read and rely on product slogans. In particular, those that talk about health and nutrition and which are present on the packaging of many foods and beverages arouse more authority.

79% of the interviewees declare to be attracted and influenced by the slogans during the purchase. 12%, on the other hand, do not pay attention to the labels because they are too small, or simply due to lack of time. The data emerges from a recent survey by Altroconsumo which seeks to establish how sure we are of buying the best products at the supermarket and how much, however, our choice is conditioned by the advertising and packaging of that specific product. Altroconsumo has repeatedly turned the spotlight on the products we find on display in the supermarket. After the ranking of the best vegetable drink in circulation and that of the least sugary packaged snacks, here is some information to stop being fooled about quality.

Reading labels: a right and a duty

For proper nutrition, you should always take a look at the food label. This step is essential to understand how and with which ingredients the product is made, how to store it and when its expiration date arrives.

Carefully reading the instructions on the packaging is certainly a greater guarantee than the reliability of the images on the packaging. In fact, it happens more and more often that health slogans hide some inaccuracies, or too many omissions. So, how do consumers behave in this regard and what should be done?

The data is not entirely encouraging. From the results of a questionnaire completed by 1,146 citizens aged between 18 and 79, it emerged that the percentage of Italians who listen to slogans exceeds 50%.

Are we sure we are buying the best products at the supermarket?

Of course, it should be remembered that the law prohibits false claims and unclear statements on labels. However, marketing campaigns for selling certain products can be based on keywords and concepts that can confuse consumers. More and more often, producers emphasize the presence (or absence) of a single ingredient, avoiding mentioning the others, which may be less healthy.

For example, you may read that a certain type of cracker has 40% less fat. It omits, however, that it has more amounts of salt than other brands. Some very common claims that entice you to buy are: “no added sugar”, “few calories”, with “natural ingredients” and “no preservatives”.

How not to be deceived?

Most consumers, experts say, stop to read the data relating to the energy value of the product they are about to buy. Next, they analyze the fat content and carbohydrate amounts. However, more than these (certainly important) values, to evaluate whether a product is more or less healthy, the quantity of simple sugars and saturated fats present should be evaluated.

Furthermore, it must be remembered that the ingredients listed on the label appear in descending order, so the first ones on the list are present in higher quantities.
