Azerbaijan accused Iran on Friday, January 27 of being responsible for the attack on its embassy in Tehran which left one dead, calling it a “terrorist”and announced the evacuation of its diplomatic staff from the Iranian capital.

“All responsibility for the attack rests with Iran”spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Ayxan Hacizada told local media, saying that a recent anti-Azerbaijani campaign in the Iranian press had “encouraged the attack”.

Embassy staff are “being evacuated from Iran”he then told the Turkish television channel TRT Haber TV.

For his part, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev said on Twitter: “I strongly condemn the terrorist attack against the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran”.

In a statement, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry had earlier said that a “man armed with a Kalashnikov” had killed “the head of the guard of the diplomatic mission”. Two other embassy guards were injured and are in a “satisfactory condition”, according to the same source. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani strongly condemned in a statement “the armed attack (…) which unfortunately resulted in the death of one person”.

“According to the preliminary investigation, these are personal reasons”, said Nasser Kanani. According to the Iranian police, the attacker was immediately arrested and mentioned “personal and family problems” during the preliminary investigation.
