Many speeches have been made in the Bundestag, but never by a monarch. This is about to change soon.
Germany will be visited by King Charles III at the end of March. (74) and his wife Queen Camilla (75). There is then a very special welcome gift for the king: speaking time in the Bundestag Berlin!

According to The Pioneer, the speech is scheduled for March 30. This has not (yet) been officially confirmed by the palace. Appointments will be made in due course. After the stopover in Berlin, the royal couple should continue to Hamburg.
“I am delighted that the British leader, King Charles III. will speak in the Bundestag,” commented Katja Mast (52), First Parliamentary Secretary of the SPD parliamentary group, to the dpa.
But not everyone is enthusiastic. “It is a good tradition that no head of state has spoken in the Bundestag who has not been elected. And we shouldn’t change that either,” criticized Jan Korte (45), First Parliamentary Secretary of the Left.
Even Pope Benedict († 95), who was allowed to open his speech in the Bundestag in September 2011, was “elected in a vote among 115 men from his organization”.
Charles was in the Bundestag for the last time on the day of commemoration on November 15, 2020 – at that time as a prince and heir to the throne. There he swore by the bond between Germany and Great Britain. And even in German! “The central bonds between us will remain strong. We will always be friends, partners and allies,” it said.
As of now, it will be the first trip abroad for the king, who was appointed Britain’s new head of state after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II on September 8th. According to the French media, the trip will not start in Germany: Charles and Camilla should visit Paris before Berlin.
Buckingham Palace has not yet commented on the couple’s travel plans.
