In the speech he gave during the opening of the VII Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) that is being held in the City of Buenos Aires, President Alberto Fernández called for strengthening “institutionality and democracy in the face of a recalcitrant right and fascist”.

“We have to work to guarantee and strengthen the institutions of our region. We believe that democracy is at risk. After the pandemic, we have seen how far-right sectors threaten our peoples,” said the president.

In this sense, he continued: “We cannot allow the recalcitrant and fascist right to put the institutionality of our people at risk. We saw it in Brazil, a few days ago, when madness populated the streets of Brasilia, and here in Argentina when someone tried to kill our vice president.”

In turn, he called for unity, stating that “the time has come to make Latin America and the Caribbean a single region that defends the same interests for the progress of our peoples.”

Alberto Fernández received this morning, as host, those attending the VII Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) that takes place at the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center, in Buenos Aires.

Yesterday, he shared an intense agenda with the President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, in what was his return to the block, after the management of Jair Bolsonaro.

absent presidents

Although the 33 nations that make up CELAC will have their representatives participating in the Buenos Aires summit, not all the national leaders will be present since some sent other officials as delegates.

This is the case of Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua, who will send his foreign minister, and Andrés Manuel López Obrador (Mexico), who usually delegates international commitments to his Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard.

They are joined by Nicolás Maduro, from Venezuela, who announced that he will not come to the Celac summit and that his country will be represented by Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto, denouncing plans “of the neo-fascist right.”

At the same time, the Peruvian Dina Boluarte (Peru) will not attend either, in the midst of the strong crisis and protests that her country is going through; Added to this is the absence of Guillermo Lasso from Ecuador and in her place will come Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín.
