Even if rumors still and always hover around the fact that Mundfish, the studio behind Atomic Heart, would mess with the Russian government, for a few hours now, the debate around the game has been relocated. The question is no longer whether Atomic Heart is a pro-war game or on the contrary, a criticism, but whether the game is a sexist product or not.
It all starts with a tweet published by the journalist Pierre à agrisiser who points to a fridge named Nora which is used to improve the equipment of the hero of the game, a former KGB agent. This famous machine is indeed reminiscent of the pink telephone, she rants rude remarks and makes sexual advances that can quickly make the player uncomfortable.
Finally, some gritty dialogues will have to find their audience, at the risk of causing some discomfort in others. Let’s talk for a moment about Nora, this distributor of weapons and plasmids that you meet a few times and who summons you in a shrill voice to accede to her sexual requests while you try somehow to navigate through her extremely convoluted and really unintuitive. Before the controversy surrounding the Nora fridge broke out, other elements deemed sexist were already pointed out by players, starting with the presence of two robots with advantageous curves in the game, but also by a publication made by Mundfish himself.
Indeed, even before the game was available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and on the Game Pass, to keep players waiting, Mundfish posted the game’s soundtrack on YouTube . However, this video – since removed from the networks – did not just broadcast the game’s music, but also took the opportunity to highlight the same two robots mentioned above performing suggestive poses to say the least. It is obviously this accumulation of elements deemed sexist that ended up attracting the wrath of the players.
