With “Angry Birds”, the Finnish developers from Rovio established a strong gaming brand early on in the mobile segment that still has traction today. Now the creators of the game Rovio Classics: Angry Birds have confirmed that the Android version will be removed from the Play Store. The iOS version is also renamed to “Red’s First Flight”.

The reason given for this step is that the game negatively influences the other games from the in-house line-up. That sounds pretty ominous and almost seems as if the classic is too successful and spoils the fun of the newer titles for the players. That wouldn’t surprise me personally: at least I found the older games in the “Angry Birds” series to be much more successful than current consorts like “Angry Birds: Journey”.

As early as 2019, Rovio had collected some games from the “Angry Birds” series, but then re-released the original in 2022 as “Rovio Classics: Angry Birds”. You seem to have cut yourself in the flesh somehow. Anyone who has already downloaded the title can continue to use it. Tomorrow is the end for everyone else – the game will then be removed from the Google Play Store.

Where the dog is probably buried: “Rovio Classics: Angry Birds” costs a one-off fee of 1.19 euros and has no microtransactions or advertising. This means that no more money is made with the game after the purchase. Rovio, on the other hand, is eagerly popping in-app purchases and advertising into newer games. You probably don’t like it when players prefer to buy a title in the series once and be satisfied with it.

My Opinion: Maybe Rovio should recognize the signals from the community and offer a one-time purchase at the beginning instead of constantly collecting. In any case, I would prefer that as a user – and how are you?
