Attorney General urges Petro to reveal his past as a guerrilla

BOGOTA.- The recent statements by the Attorney General of Colombia, Francisco Barbosa, urging President Gustavo Petro to clarify his guerrilla past in the M-19, unleashed an intense debate about amnesty and transparency in the president’s political history.

Barbosa, who is about to leave his position as prosecutor, emphasized the need to that Petro reveal in detail his criminal activities during his participation in the M-19, as well as the possible victims and his specific role in the guerrilla organization.

The prosecutor’s criticism not only focuses on Petro’s past history, but also on the effectiveness of the amnesty granted to demobilized members of the M-19 in 1990. Barbosa argues that said amnesty has failed to provide a clear image of the armed group’s actions, nor guarantee non-repetition nor offer comprehensive reparation to the victims.

The debate extends to the realm of political ethics, as Barbosa questions the public perception created by Petro, who has been criticized for speaking “almost admiringly” about members of the M-19 involved in the takeover of the Palace of Justice in 1985. and has appointed former terrorists to high positions.

Prosecutor Barboza’s request not only puts the focus on Petro’s past, but also raises questions about the effectiveness of reconciliation mechanisms and transparency in Colombian politics.
