Avatar: The Way of Water hit the $1 billion mark at the global box office this week, just two weeks after its theatrical release. In the early days, forecasts were that the feature would not be as profitable as the first, released 13 years ago.

In the US alone, the James Cameron sequel grossed $300 million. With the conquest, Avatar: The Way of Water becomes the second film of 2022 to earn more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Avatar 2therefore surpasses the movies Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Jurassic World: Domainsecond only to Top Gun: Maverick. It is worth remembering that the film is still showing, so there are still chances that the last days of the year will change the 2022 ranking.

Success?

Although the number is more than relevant for the film industry, Avatar: The Way of Water it needs bigger achievements to really be considered profitable.

According to director James Cameron, the film needs to go out of theaters as the fourth or third biggest film of all time, grossing around $2 billion at the worldwide box office.

Comparing with the first, Avatar 2 it is still far from reaching these numbers. The 2009 film accumulates US$ 2.9 billion at the box office worldwide, an amount achieved thanks to the re-releases that took place over all these years.

Avatar: The Way of Water accompanies Jake (Sam Worthngton) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) now with a family. To protect themselves from humans, they travel to a distant region of Pandora and start to live with beings like them, but adapted to survive in the water. The film is now showing in cinemas across Brazil.
