The Berlin Greens are calling for more speed in the construction of accommodation for refugees. Around 1,000 places per district in new modular accommodation (MUF) have long been agreed with the districts, Green Party chairwoman Susanne Mertens said on Wednesday. But you have to implement that as quickly as possible and build the buildings, sometimes too little is happening here. Mertens advocated avoiding “large structures” when accommodating refugees and relying on decentralized, smaller solutions. In principle, MUFs are multi-family houses with apartments built from prefabricated parts.

Significantly more refugees arrived in Berlin last year than in previous years. An estimated 100,000 people from the Ukraine alone found a new home here. There were also asylum seekers – by November there were around 13,000. Since almost all accommodation has been full for a long time and new places are needed quickly, the Senate was forced to resort to large-scale and more temporary solutions, for example in the hangars of the former Tempelhof Airport.

Most recently (as of the end of 2022) there were 30,000 places in reception and community facilities for refugees in Berlin – more than ever before. According to earlier information from the Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD), the opening of new MUFs is not expected until the end of the year.

The Berlin Greens are meeting this Saturday for a party conference to revise some points in their 2021 election program for the repeat election on February 12 and then to re-decide it. In addition to aid for refugees, according to Mertens and her co-chairman Philmon Ghirmai, the social security of people in times of crisis and the acceleration of the heat transition are among the issues.

Among other things, the Greens are calling for a subsidy program for heat pumps. They also want to open up more new heat sources, such as geothermal energy or waste water. (dpa)
