The Armenian Defense Ministry said, according to the Interfax news agency, that the information was incorrect, without providing further details.

The conflicting statements came as a mass exodus of ethnic Armenians continued from the Nagorno-Karabakh region after Azerbaijan defeated fighters from the separatist region this month in a conflict dating back to the Soviet era.

More than 100,000 of the estimated 120,000 ethnic Armenians have already left the region for Armenia, according to the head of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
