Skirmishers

If today, Omar Sy is a world star particularly known for his excellence in comedy, we should not forget his obvious talent to appear in various and varied dramas. The one in question sets its context in 1917, in the midst of the First World War: the young Thierno sees himself conscripted into the French army and inevitably, it is not really to the taste of his father, Bakary Diallo (Omar Sy) who will do everything to recover him… by joining the front in turn. A film with a strong and powerful subject that tackles a dark side of French history, here directed by the man behind La Vie en grand.

Nostalgia

Babylon, Tirailleurs, Terrifier 2… Cinema releases in January 2023

After all, who better to talk mafia than Italy itself? Nostalgia immerses its story in the dark streets of Naples, a city plagued by the camorra… but make no mistake, its subject is actually that of a man, Felice, who returns to his native city after forty years of absence. On the spot, he finds streets dominated by violence and above all, his past does not escape him in the least: this Italian feature film intends to penetrate both the secret of a man with a heavy liability, but also to explore the codes of modern Neapolitan society. And as you may know, they are ruthless.

The Rascals

Babylon, Tirailleurs, Terrifier 2… Cinema releases in January 2023

Heading to the 80s in France with Les Rascals, a group of slightly rebellious young people wander the streets with a certain recklessness. But when one of them recognizes a skinhead who beat him up years ago, he takes action and decides to take justice into his own hands. The problem is that the skinhead also has his network and it is his whole group which then undertakes to skin the Rascals, while the extreme right is gaining ground in the country : having already won over critics, this film (Jimmy Laporal-Trésor’s first feature film) promises to be an intense experience, with an obviously very human message.

  • Cinema release : January 11, 2023
  • Director : Jimmy Laporal-Treasury
  • With : Jonathan Feltre, Missoum Slimani, Jonathan Eap

Terrify 2

Babylon, Tirailleurs, Terrifier 2… Cinema releases in January 2023

This is a film that lives up to its name. Six years after a particularly hardcore first film, Damien Leone is doing it again and will soon give birth to Terrifier 2, the concept of which hasn’t really moved: an ultra-creepy killer clown, resurrected in the morgue, sets out to chase a teenage girl and her brother on Halloween night. So yes, the concept is seen and reviewed but here, this dark adventure intends to stand out with its unhealthy tone, its abundant gore side and this atmosphere that flirts between pure, almost parodic slasher and sought-after cinematic tones. It’s clearly not for everyone, but it will undoubtedly find its audience.

  • Cinema release : January 11, 2023
  • Director : Damien Leone
  • With : Lauren LaVera, David Howard Thornton, Jenna Kanell

babylon

Babylon, Tirailleurs, Terrifier 2… Cinema releases in January 2023

Maybe we have one of the best projects of the whole year. Damien Chazelle is clearly not just anyone in the cinematographic landscape: this Oscar-winning director has already produced the breathtaking Whiplash, but also La La Land or even First Man: he is now someone who matters in Hollywood and that good, since Babylon tells precisely… the creation of Hollywood. And with a five-star cast: Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Tobey Maguire and more will play various actors from the 1920s who allowed the cinema industry to explode, all with a tone halfway between bombast and comedy. We hope to have there the rare pearl of the month of January!

  • Cinema release : January 18, 2023
  • Director : Damien Chazelle
  • With : Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Tobey Maguire

Earwig

Babylon, Tirailleurs, Terrifier 2… Cinema releases in January 2023

If you like the bizarre and the unhealthy, but also the beautiful cinema to cry, you’ve come to the right place. Earwig (the English word for the earwig insect) is a frankly particular film whose story takes place in a dismal building, sheltered from a Europe haunted by war: inside, Albert takes care of Mia, a little girl… with icy teeth. The experiments are bizarre, the atmosphere too and the Master, a mysterious individual, oversees the whole operation from a distance before ordering the two individuals to prepare for departure. Honestly, we don’t really know where we’ll go in Earwig, but the photography promises to be superb, the plot full and mysterious and the reviews rave reviews. It’s just not for everyone and a bit special, take it for granted.

  • Cinema release : January 18, 2023
  • Director : Lucile Hadzihalilovic
  • With : Paul Hilton, Alex Lawther, Romane Hemelaers

Win or die

Babylon, Tirailleurs, Terrifier 2… Cinema releases in January 2023

A high-caliber French film that explores a pivotal period in the history of France: We are in 1793 and Charette, a former officer of the Royal Navy, returns home to Vendée. But very quickly, he finds himself at the head of the rebellion and becomes a powerful and charismatic leader, in addition to being a formidable strategist with behind him peasants, women, deserters, wives and children… Together, they then form an army that has only one idea: to defend freedom. On the program, therefore, a period reconstruction of first choices, big battles and a licked aesthetic for this feature film to definitely watch. And then, a film on the War of Vandée and Charette de La Contrie (real facts, by the way), it’s not every day at the cinema.

  • Cinema release : January 25, 2023 2022
  • Director : Vincent Mottez and Paul Mignot
  • With : Hugo Becker, Rod Paradot, Gilles Cohen

Tar

Babylon, Tirailleurs, Terrifier 2… Cinema releases in January 2023

If you like classical music and spicy psychological thrillers, Tár is likely to interest you. Lydia Tár, played by Cate Blanchett, is the gifted conductor of a renowned German symphony orchestra. She is clearly on top and as her book is about to be published and a highly anticipated concerto is about to be released, her life will literally explode in the space of a few weeks. Here is a film with a tortured atmosphere, superb imagery and sharp artistic echoes: a cocktail that is reminiscent of that of Black Swan, some would say. For once, it’s Todd Field who is directing, the man behind The Creed of Violence with Daniel Craig, released in 2020. Hang on, because Tár is better than ever (sorry).

  • Cinema release : January 25, 2023 2022
  • Director : Todd Field
  • With : Cate Blanchett, Noemie Merlant, Nina Hoss
