Gareth Bale is retiring. The attacker announced on social media: “After careful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football.”
Bale was actually under contract with Los Angeles FC until the summer. However, the 33-year-old was able to end his contract unilaterally by clause. Apparently he made use of it.
Five-time Champions League winner
Bale started his world career at Tottenham Hotspur. In 2013 he then switched to Real Madrid for the then record transfer fee of 101 million euros. The model athlete won the Champions League five times with the royals.
Bale has also made 111 appearances for his native Wales, scoring 40 goals. At the World Cup in Qatar, he and his team were eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2016 he led Wales to the semi-finals of the European Championships in France.
