The former US President was awarded the Nobel Prize early in his tenure. Was the award justified?
Whether Barack Obama this Award deserved is still controversial. He was elected in 2008 and inaugurated the following year as the 44th US President. Previously, he prevailed against Republican John McCain.
The young democrat made many promises during the election campaign and was seen by the population as a beacon of hope. In Europe, too, people were pleased with the outcome of the election. Obama promised to close the Guantanamo prison camp. He pulled US troops out of Iraq, offered talks with Iran and North Korea, and began negotiations with Russia on nuclear disarmament.

At the end of 2009, after less than a year as US President, the committee in Oslo awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize. The justification states that Obama will be honored “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”.

Even then there was criticism in the decision: the award comes too early, it is not yet clear whether the President deserves the award. And indeed: the conclusion after Barack Obama’s term in office is mixed.

To begin with, Obama must face the worst of the consequences Great Depression contain. The US economy is to be boosted again with a huge economic stimulus package, emergency loans and reforms. Obama’s second term in office is marked by the fight against IS. He sends troops to Syria and Iraq – and wages a drone war against al Qaeda.
When the Syrian dictator Assad uses poison gas against his own people, they react USA not. A year later, Russia annexed Crimea. Tensions between the US and Russia are rising again.
There are also domestic problems: at the end of his second tenure the social climate in the USA is poisoned. The US Congress is also almost unable to act and there is hardly any cooperation between Republicans and Democrats. In the subsequent election, the TV star Donald Trump, who was initially ridiculed, prevailed and led the country to the brink of an overthrow. (lro)
