Beaches in Wareham closed due to bacteria

Five beaches in Wareham, Massachusetts, are closed after tests found high levels of bacteria in the water, the city’s Health Department said Thursday.

Briarwood, Forbes, Point Independence, Swifts, and Pinehurst are closed to bathing until further notice.

The Wareham Board of Health and the Barnstable County Laboratory are monitoring the situation.

He Barnstable County tests its beach water weekly looking for problems like fecal contamination and cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae. These problems can make contact with water dangerous for people and pets.

No further details were immediately available.
