On Thursday, the heads of the SPD, Greens and FDP will meet in the federal government to discuss the future of major infrastructure projects such as the extension of the A100 in the coalition committee. As early as Wednesday, a stop to the further construction of the Berlin city motorway should have been discussed in the Bundestag’s transport committee at the request of the left. But once again the topic was taken off the agenda at short notice, apparently at the urging of the Greens.

“Obviously, the traffic light coalition is doing everything it can to avoid having to show its colors before the Berlin elections as to whether the A100 will continue to be built through Friedrichshain and Lichtenberg or not,” said Pascal Meiser (left), member of the Berlin Bundestag.

In particular, the behavior of the Greens is taking on “increasingly schizophrenic traits” in this regard. Meiser called on the traffic light coalition to stop the further construction of the A100 “before more and more money flows into this billion dollar grave”.

Green politician rejects allegations of the left

Only last weekend had the party leader of the Greens, Ricarda Lang, declared that they wanted to stop the A100 extension. However, probably because the coalition is divided on this issue, the Greens want to avoid a vote on the issue.

The transport policy spokesman for the Greens parliamentary group, Berlin member of the Bundestag Stefan Gelbhaar, defended his parliamentary group’s actions. “An election campaign by the Left Party in the Bundestag will not get us anywhere – the position of the Alliance Greens is crystal clear: we want to stop the further construction of the A100.”

The requirement plan review is currently underway, said Gelbhaar. Projects like the A100 must therefore also meet the standards of climate protection and a climate check. “The result is pending.”

Gelbhaar also contradicted the assumption that the FDP-led Federal Ministry of Transport was inexorably pushing ahead with the planning of the 17th construction phase.

“I requested the tender documents for the planning of the 17th construction phase in order to create more transparency. The FDP didn’t really make any progress last year,” he said.
